How to Start on Instagram for Business: 5 Lessons I Learned

Lesson 1 from starting a new Instagram Account: The algorithm loves new accounts

We hear so much crap about the algorithm working against business owners. I understand that it can feel frustrating when your account isn’t being seen. But as a business owner, I want you to feel secure in the fact that the algorithm will work with you as long as you put the effort in.

If you go into starting your new account with the mindset that it wont grow… then it wont grow. You have to be willing to put the work in and have the empowering mindset that the algorithm will work with you!

Here are some things you can do that the algorithm appreciates:

  • Engaging with other accounts by leaving comments, sharing posts and replying to Stories
  • Posting consistently on your Feed and Stories
  • Responding to all comments and DMs you receive
  • Trying out a variety of content including Reels, IGTV, Live video and Stories

Lesson 2 from starting a new Instagram Account: People will follow you as long as you have a great profile

Another limiting belief we might struggle with when starting a new Instagram account is that other users won’t follow us back because we have so few followers.

Newsflash: It doesn’t matter if you have a low follower count. People will still follow you as long as you have a great profile!

Here are some ways to improve your new Instagram profile:

  • Optimize your bio with keywords, your name, what your business is about and why we should follow you
  • Have a clear profile photo that shows your face
  • Create interesting highlights that bring your viewers on a journey
  • Post consistent, interesting content on your Feed and Stories

Lesson 3 from starting a new Instagram Account: Reels and Viral Content will get more eyes on your profile

You already know I’m obsessed with Reels! If you want to utilize Reels to grow your business, download your free Irresistible Reels Checklist here and check out some of our previous episodes on Reels.

Viral content is essentially posts that are very sharable. This can include motivational quotes, relatable content that shows your sense of humor or personality, and trending topics.

Including these types of content in addition to my educational posts and self-promotional posts added some variety to my content to keep viewers engaged.

Lesson 4 from starting a new Instagram Account: Keep your profile fresh and active with Stories

Showing your face on Stories will humanize your brand and help to build trust. Not every Story has to be face-to-camera, of course! But posting to Stories consistently helps your account look active all the time.

If new people come to your profile, they want to make sure your account is actually active. The easiest way to show this to viewers immediately is by having Stories up and having that ring around your profile photo.

Lesson 5 from starting a new Instagram Account: You get what you give!

As strategy coach Candice Morales said in Episode 4, Be the follower you want to have!

Develop an engagement strategy that works for you to start engaging with relevant outside accounts. This can consist of setting aside 30 minutes, 3 times per week to seek out new accounts to follow and leave genuine, thoughtful comments.

The most important thing to remember when starting your new Instagram account is to show up confidently and authentically. As long as you do that, you’ll start seeing growth in no time!
